Historic Valley Junction in West Des Moines is getting ready for their Fall Antique Jamboree! This is our 38th year! The show will be held on Sunday, Sept. 10th from 8am to 4pm, rain or shine. More than 75 dealers from across the Midwest will set up shop on 5th Street & will offer a wide array of antiques for sale. You will find furniture, primitives, architectural salvage, Mid-Century Modern, antique lighting, vintage clothing and jewelry. Be on the lookout for vintage toys, advertising signs, textiles, pottery, glassware, china & re-purposed & up-cycled one of a kind items. Whether you're new to the fun of antiquing or an old hand, you'll probably see something you've never seen before.
Tracey Smith, owner of Cheeky Monkey Vintage Jewelry, has been doing this show, Spring & Fall, since the mid '90's. You'll find her in the 200 block, south end, on the east side of the street. She and her husband sell a wide range of vintage fine and costume jewelry from all eras, including Victorian pieces of the mid 1800's to rhinestones from the '50's & '60's. They also sell Native American jewelry from the '70's & contemporary fine jewelry & artist made pieces. She has been collecting since she was a child. She went to garage sales & flea markets with her family & was always thrilled to find jewelry. She has been selling antiques & collectibles since 1992. She quit her day job in 1997 & went full time in the antiques business. About ten years ago she decided to focus on jewelry, her passion.
They have 12 shows on their schedule this year. She also sells on Ruby Lane & eBay.
The thing she likes most about the Jamboree is that it is an easy show. It’s close to home. The promoters are easy to work with. One day in and out so people come to buy. They see the same faces year after year as well as people new to the antique/vintage markets.
She says shopping the show is the best part of being there! She often spend several hundred dollars before she makes a sale!
Kathy & Dave Young & Deb Greiner have a great time ”repurposing, redesigning & rethinking" treasures for their business, River Valley Ideas....based in Adel. Kathy started going to auctions as a young adult & was inspired by items that were unusual or could be given new life. She has fun buying something, redesigning it & then finding a new project. Deb is inspired by color & old forgotten furniture. She looks for old things that can be made new with a new function. She says "It's a bit of the past & a bit of the future". They are fairly new to the business, just 3 years. They are signed up for 8 shows this year. Their booth always looks great! They set up on the west side of the 200 block at the north end of the street. This is their third year of doing the Jamboree, doing both the Spring & Fall shows. They like it because of the people who put the show together & the customers who come to shop.
We had a new event for our Spring Jamboree. Jason Hallberg, owner of The Continental Auctioneers School in Buffalo Center, Iowa, brought some students from his school to get first hand auctioneering experience. The school had a truck that they drove up the street equipped with an auctioneer's station. Dealers that were set up at the show could put two or three items from their booth into the "rolling" auction. We were asked to keep the value under $40 each. Items were auctioned off next to the dealer's booth. There was no auctioneer's commission, so the dealer got the full sale price. It was a lot of fun! They might do the event again at the Spring Jamboree in 2018.
The Vintage Tractor Club of Iowa is going to be at the Fall Jamboree with 25 vintage tractors. They will be set up in the 300 block of 5th St. from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Don't miss it!
