Scavenger’s Journey organizers are excited for the 2019 event. Started in 2012, Scavenger’s Journey was modeled after similar successful events such as Nebraska’s Junk Jaunt, the World’s Longest Yard Sale, and the Kansas Treasure Hunt to name a few. Scavenger’s Journey, like these other events, seeks to promote commerce in small communities by holding city-wide garage sales, hosting flea markets, and showcasing community groups and businesses.

Participating communities in 2019 include Mount Vernon, Stickney, Plankinton, White Lake, Kimball, Chamberlain, Oacoma, Reliance, Kennebec, Presho, Murdo, Belvidere, and Kadoka. It is the first year for Stickney, Belvidere and Kadoka. Each town will have city wide rummage sales, flea markets, and businesses open for you to shop for treasures. Watch for the participant signs! There will also be fundraisers and great food along the way. Books listing all the sales can be purchased for $3 in each town or gotten from the website www.scavengersjourney.com after June 14.

Fabulous Finds in Chamberlain is sponsoring a flip contest. You need to buy an item along the journey and repurpose it, with an entrance fee of $10 for the possibility of a $500 first prize. Complete information can be found on the website: scavengersjourney.com/flipcontest

Scavenger’s Journey is a non-profit organization. Sponsors of the event include each of the local communities, local businesses, and the South Dakota Missouri River Tourism group. Besides putting on the weekend event, Scavenger’s Journey sponsors a $250 scholarship. Jacob Birkeland from Murdo is the 2019 recipient. High School seniors from the participating communities who plan to pursue a career in business can apply.
