A sled, sledge or sleigh is a land vehicle that slides across an icy or snow-covered surface. It is usually built out of wood with a slotted top and/or a smooth bottom supported by two or more smooth, narrow and log runners made of polished steel similar to skis thus reducing friction. The sleds are mainly used in wintry weather when the ground is covered with snow or ice. It is great fun to ride a sled especially when a nice steep hill is available. I had many a great sled ride down very steep hills around my home as a young lad in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
